Cathy Are you looking for people interested in constructing domestic and community digesters in Kenya? I am sure that there is a big potential for this. Do you have skills locally in building simple biogas digesters? If not, would the first ste...

Rising Food Prices Forces United Kingdom Government Biofuels Rethink

Biofuels were being seen as the sustainable answer to both global warming and a means to take the sting out of rising fuel prices.

However, a report to be published on Monday 6 July 2008, is expected to force the Prime Minister Gordon Brown to rethink his support for using crops to keep Britain's cars and lorries running.

Unexpectedly rapidly rising world food prices look set to force Gordon Brown to take U-turn over the use of crops such as corn, rapeseed, palm and soya to produ… Continue

UK Carbon Reduction Commitment Lacks Ambition to Meet the Challenge

Over the past 18 months the concerns about climate change in the UK have finally become main-stream. Our political establishment has finally had to start to take the looming environmental crisis seriously, due to media and public pressure.

We have seen all political parties in opposition rewriting their green policies and touting them as being well ahead of the current government's plans.

Meanwhile the government is planning to bring a first ever Climate Change Bill to parliament during 2008.… Continue

I have been involved in installation of small biogas systems in Kenya for the last 5 years and therefore very much intrested in the advancement of the methane production based technologies. However the main feedstock to most biogas systems in Kenya is cattle dung and this restricts biogas uptake to only those who have livestock and within certain geographical coverage. I have heard of small sized and low cost Sri-Lankan plug flow type biogas systems that use agricultural residue to generate biogas. How do i get to know how to design and install one? Delete Comment

All very impressive and generous to allow us to use these photos - with attribution of course - of your images to promote Biogas Digestion. Do you have any plants planned for the UK yet? Maybe, with such success in Germany and the Netherlands you would find it unnecessary to move to a new UK market?

I am not sure that anyone has even been considering drying the liquid fertilizer in the UK. Sounds a great idea - but using an RO system is expensive?

Hello Steve,
Indeed above foto's are taken from our operating biogas installations in Belgium (1) and The Netherlands (4). They are custommade build by a sistercompany (Certified Energy bv) of Schmack Biogas AG (Germany) (200+ in operation in Germany).
All our installations are placed on a farming site or at a cooperation of farmers. The minimum economical size is 750 kWeh at current green certificates rate in Belgium and Holland. The economical size in Germany is slightly smaller because of longer (20 yrs) fixed green energy compensation rates. On top of this in the Benelux we have the obligation to treat our final digestate ( liquid after fermentation) up to a dryed fertilizer (very valuable and thus exportable) and a reuseable water (after RO-filtration) which is extra and costly.
A complete operational unit can be seen within 14 days in The Netherlands. Pictures will follow. We currently started to build a 40.000 tons/a unit (1.672 kWe) in Belgium and this will be operational begin 2009.
More units are in several stages of the permitting process (which is the big burden to get). All our pictures can be used for other publications as long as you attribute them to us.
