Friends of biogas, for those interested in and promoting biogas in the UK
Biogas NEEDS Publicity!
Biogas from waste materials has none of the negative connotations of biofuels from energy crops, where there is a lot of discussion as to whether these crops don't:
- consume almost as much fossil fuels in their production as direct use of fossil fuels,
- emit more atmospheric pollution themselves while growing, and
- by using food crops raise the price of food.
The equation is far more positive for biogas from waste, and by digestion of these materials we also avoid landfilling, and provide fertiliser and soil improving fibrous outputs to the benefit of soil structure.
These are all major plus points which should be being explained to the public, and that is BEFORE we consider the further benefits of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) for Anaerobic Digestion and the use of the biogas to provide CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) for transport vehicle power.
Forget hybrid vehicles as the greenest transport vehicles - they give a very dubious "green" outlook when whole life vehicle impact is considered incluing battery disposal.
Forget biodiesel etc. CNG is the greenest and incidentally usually (certainly in the UK) the most potentially advantageously taxed.
BUT, where can we buy CNG? It is not available to the public, and is only available to public transport operators in some forward thinking EU staes.
The total amount of energy from waste which can be used, is not a large percentage of national demand, but it is large enough that it should certainly not be ignored! By the same guide it is worth campaigning for.
It does deserve more support from governments, and the public, than it is getting.
